I’m really sorry to everyone who likes reading my blog posts for not doing more but I get a ton of writers block and I find I’m not able to come up with paragraphs out of thin air. I love talking about games but when it comes down to writing/typing it I find it’s just been erased out of my mind. So I hope you can forgive me and hear is what I’ve been playing over the last week and what I’m looking forward to in the upcoming weeks. Continue reading

Kijjaa !! The future of desktop/iDevice games ?

I didn’t know a thing about this before I watched the Whiskey Media Happy Hour yesterday and I’d like to thank Jeff Gerstmann for showing off this super cool desktop game that uses your iPhone as the controller, yeah that’s right with the power of the internet you can use your phone to control a browser game. The app itself isn’t free but it’s on sale right now till tomorrow for 59p which is a steal trust me. The game is simple you control a ship with the iDevice accelerometer and press the buttons on the screen to shoot. The objective is simple dodge obstacles and shoot other ships to rack up points. If you lose lives don’t worry as you can collect more on the way. It’s not the hardest of games because it is aimed at students and workers but it’s good and what it’s meant to do.

I really hope the guys over at Kijjaa support this app with updates like a leader board, bosses and more games in the future like a snake game, platformer or racing game. From what I’ve gathered from the tweets Kijjaa is only a small company so I really hope this does well for them because I see many great things coming from them in the future.

If you have played it tell me what you think of it below in the comments and what you would like to see in the future.

My Top 5 Games Of The Year

Last year we had the likes of Arkham Asylum, MW2, Assassins Creed 2 and Uncharted 2 but no games this year topped Uncharted 2 in my opinion but overall we had a better selection of games and if you thought 2010 was great 2011 will blow your socks off. After the break I will list my top 5 games of the year along with my most anticipated title of 2011.

Ghost Trick demo available now

I’ve been waiting a long time to get my fingers on this unique looking DS title from the developers of Phoenix Wright (the objection guy) and finally GameSpot made all that happen by releasing a flash demo that you can access here. It lasts around 15 minutes and they make sure you know it’s a demo because some of the stuff you can do in it won’t happen in the retail version.

I’ve played through it all and I was left wanting more as it’s very enjoyable and it’s a huge shame it had to be delayed as I could be playing it right now. The one thing that stood out for me was the art and how the game flowed. It reminded me of Broken Sword and anything that reminds me of that is a good thing. The characters look like they will be very fun to watch and there seems to be a main plot which looks like it could be interesting. From what I heard of the music it seems to be really good.

Everyone that owns a DS should check it out as I really think it could be a stand out game for the platform next year. It’s set to be released January 14th in Europe so not that long to go until I can possess things.

Happy tricking everyone !!

Game Dev Story – Review

So this little game developed by a small team from Japan started getting lots of positive feedback from game journalists and people everywhere. It currently has a full 5 star rating on iTunes from 528 ratings left by people. The game is pitched as a game development sim where you start a studio and develop your own games. From that moment I had no interest in it whatsoever since I’m not the biggest fan of simulation games but after Giant Bombs review and a few more positive comments on Twitter I decided I might as well download it since it only costs £2.39.

After I got my first game developed I fell in love with Game Dev Story. It feels like more of an RPG than a sim game and it’s really simple. You hire your staff from advertisements and they have different stats in different sections such as sound, graphics, programming and story creating. After your game is completed you will get 5 reviews and then your game will go on sale to the public. You can gain fans and get fan letters and also you will lose fans if the game isn’t good or you don’t release a game in a while. There are different ways to get fans such as advertising and having magazines write articles about your company. There will be a game expo you can attend to gain fans but you don’t have to go and there will be a game awards show at the end of every year. I have currently won 3 awards for best sound and design and also the worst game award. There is also a runner-up category.

New consoles will get released and old ones will stop being sold so you need to make lots of money to keep buying the licenses for the newer consoles. The game only goes up to 20 years and after that you will get a final score but I think you can carry on past that if you want. I haven’t reached it yet but I can see why many people have said after the 20th year there doesn’t seem to be any new things so I hope the developers create an update or a new game to keep fans happy.

I can say without doubt no game has kept me hooked like this has on the iPhone. I spent two hours staring at my phone playing it today. Anyone who is still on the fence about it or is a huge fan of video games and the industry, I urge you to go download it because it’s the most addictive and fun iPhone game to date. This and many other games such as Cut the Rope are just examples of how great the iPhone is for indie developers to make a name for themselves.

Well that’s me done now I’m off to go develop my new game Final Pony Fantasy an animal RPG.

9/10

What I’ve been playing this week

This week has been a mixed bag for video games but I have played a handful and I’m here to tell you my impressions of them. All of them I do like and I recommend you to try all of them.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

I’ll get this out of the way first since I’ve talked about it a lot since it’s release. I’ve heard some bad things about Lords of Shadow this week and I have no idea what game they were playing because it’s really good. OK it does nothing new but what it does do it does superbly well that other games in the genre couldn’t like Dante’s Inferno. I am getting near the end now and hopefully I’ll get it finished in the next few weeks but I doubt it since there are a ton of games coming out since we are getting near the end of the year. The last level I played was a boss battle and it was epic and the music just adds to it.

Super Meat Boy

Before the games recent release on XBLA I didn’t really know anything about Super Meat Boy only that it was so difficult and that it is. I decided to pick it up for 800 points and get it kind of free since Microsoft are doing a deal where if you spend 2400 points or more until the end of October you get 800 points added to your account. Super Meat Boy is great in little bites but it can get increasingly annoying since you literally die like a billion times. The thing that I like more than anything is the music which is like the old retro games but is remixed. I did get confirmation that the composer will be releasing the music for digital download but I didn’t get a date.

Costume Quest

I’ve been keeping my eye on this title for a while and I was so excited to finally play and finish it this week. I expected a simple, fun and humorous RPG and that’s exactly what Double Fine created. The characters and the world they are in feels like Psychonauts with a Halloween disguise. The characters were all great and I would like to see a game with them in again. It’s not the longest game in the world but it’s really enjoyable and it’s easy to get all the achievements/trophies. It’s great work by Double Fine and I think they have found what they are good at doing and hopefully we will see more from them very soon. Costume Quest is an easy recommendation for RPG fans and it’s definitely one of my favourite games on XBLA/PSN.

Vanquish

And finally we have Platinum Games second game of the year which is a great achievement to get two games out of the door in the same year and for them both to be great. I only started playing it today and after a slow start I’m really starting to enjoy it. The action is fast and it does some really nice new things such as the sliding mechanic and it uses bullet time in a great way. The story and voice acting may not be great which should be expected since it’s a Japanese action game but the game play and crazy quick time events make up for it. I really can’t wait to see what Platinum push out the door next.

So that’s what I’ve been playing this week but next week is when the games start to flow and there are some crackers such as The Force Unleashed 2 and Rock Band 3 but there is one game I will be picking up for sure and that’s Fable 3. I didn’t really like Fable 1 and that’s probably because I didn’t really like those types of RPG’s back then but I loved Fable 2 and it was one of my favourite games of that year it was released. I can’t wait to get back into the Fable world and carry on the story. Now I haven’t seen much of it but from what I have seen it seems to be a better game and more fluid than Fable 2. I will try to pick up TFU2 and Smackdown VS Raw 2011 depending on the review scores but I think I will have enough with Fable 3 since it will probably be a lengthy game.

Don’t hesitate to leave a comment on what you’ve been playing this week and what game(s) you will be picking up next week. Happy gaming everyone.
